These mitten liners were produced and issued to soldiers who would be operating in areas of extreme cold along with the mitten shells. The addition of the trigger finger to these mittens allowed soldiers to fire their rifles without needing to remove their mittens, which was a huge improvement over the older traditional style mittens.
